History

  • Mines first used in World War I

  • Increased industrialization of 2nd and 3rd world

Current Situation

  • 60 to 110 million mines laid world wide
  • 65 million mines could have been laid in last 15 years
  • 60 to 70 countries polluted
  • At the present rate it would take 1100 years to clear the world
  • It would cost an estimated $33 billion USD to clear (if no more planted)
  • 250 million landmines are stockpiled around the world
  • 2.5 million landmines are laid each year
  • In 1993 - 100,000 mines cleared and 2 million laid
  • They laid 25 times faster than they are being cleared
  • There are a minimum of 350 different types of landmines (this sum varies)
  • AP mines, $3 to produce - $1000 to clear
  • One deminer killed for every 1 - 2,000 mines cleared
  • Every hour spent mining - 1,000 to clear

Casualties

Estimates of current situation:

  • 1 million people have been killed or maimed by anti-personnel mines since 1975
  • 100,000 Americans killed or injured by landmines since the 1900's
  • 26,000 people killed or injured per year
  • 70 people killed or injured daily by landmines
  • 28.5% of survivors lose 1 or 2 legs
  • 75% of amputees need blood to survive
  • 8,000 additional disabled added per year
  • 50 - 80% of victims die before reaching hospital
  • 30-40% of survivors are women and children
  • 1st 6 hours is critical, 6-36 hours is the norm in 3rd world

The Cost and Wider Impact

 

  • In Cambodia, 1 in 236 is an amputee
  • In southern Africa - 4% hospital admissions, 25% of resources, 3.2 units of blood each - 10% of blood HIV
  • World Wide Each victim requires 2.6 operations
  • 10 year old amputee will require 25+ prosthetic devices at $3000 per device. 250,000 registrees total $750 million world wide
  • In Afghanistan estimated 600,000 casualties in 15 years - 1 in 50, 1/3 women and children. 50% of survivors are amputee or blind
