Grenades can be high explosive, smoke, chemical, incendiary or riot control.
The fuzing system is either impact or delay.
Components include body and fuze.
The fuze includes the safety lever and safety pin with pull ring.
-Grenades found in the field should be considered armed and dangerous.
-The only safety device for grenades is the safety pin.
-Any grenade encountered in the field will be blown in place (BIP).
-If a BIP is not acceptable, then an attempt should be made to replace the safety pin (if available).
-The safety lever must be taped in place.

RIFLE GRENADES
These are munitions that are projected from rifles by their design or by using special adapters.
They work the same way as a hand grenade but with added range (distance).
They have the same intended purpose as hand grenades:

  • High Explosives (fragmentation)
  • Smoke
  • Incendiary
  • Riot Control

These grenades will generally be longer than hand grenades and will have fins for stabilization.

MORTARS
Mortars come in size from 60mm to over 240mm.
-Mortars consist of three components:
-Fuze
-Body
-Fin Assembly
-Key identification feature of mortars is the holes found in the fin assemblies.
-Fuzing can be impact, delay.
-Mortars all have nose fuzes.
